My Childhood Fantasy: 221 Baker street

SHERLOCKIAN
that is the way i used to describe myself when i was young. By first meeting with this character was done in ours classroom. In probably Std-6 a date was fixed with this character when we started reading a chapter in ours english text book. The chapter named was ’’BLUE CARBUNCLE’’.

I didn’t understand the story(moreso the reasonings )initially but when the teacher  simplified the story and told more about sherlock holmes following and all the myths surrounding him and his creator Canon Doyle that I really became interested. The school library didn’t had the copies and as fate would have it I got a chance to read only 2-3 years later. The first one being the case-book of sherlock holmes.I did nothing for the next couple of days and only after I had completed the book that I did look in the other activities.

Now I have read all the sherlock holmes stories and many other(including poirot, lecoq, father brown, marple, perry mason etc). But there is truly something about the first original detective character who still captivates all the readers from the world around. though i agree that Holmes does resemble Lecoq reasoning abilities but still it has many unique characteristics.

What I like about the Holmes is that he openly declares that if I wouldn’t be a detective i would have been a criminal(way to go man). Each story of his needs to be read and re-read to completely absorb the charisma and reasoning abilities of the detective.Every story is fresh and original.Nothing seems to be forced.Everything is so casual and natural that you feel that you are actually the part of the plot.

the reasoning ability is marvellous and the way he tells watson about his methods to tackle the case that it seems that it was so easy to see that how one can miss it.Myself have now matured enough and now i don’t try to figure out the culprit.Just i follow like Watson and wait for the master detective to give reasoning at the end to satisfy my appetite for the mystery.

great one and I firmly beleive there will be no great detective like the one who once lived in the humble lodgings of the 221 BAKER’S STREET

Case of the Terrified Typist – Erle Stanley Gardner

There was a time and sometimes now too that i felt that there is something empty in my world.Just had finished all the sherlock HOLMES and POIROTS. I knew no other name of detectives and I was completely blank about what next.

I used to buy old second hand book from my favorite book stall in a nondescrpit galli besides the bus stand. One day i was just gazing through the book stall, then suddenly the stall owner inquired what i want. i told him my dilemma and he suggested the erle stanley gardner book(case of ticking clock).that was how i got started with PERRY MASON.

In the terrified typist(my third book of this series), there is an interesting case of a typist(Not DELLA STREET), here we see the same sound logical reasoning from Mason which sometimes reminds me of Holmes.Paul Drake(detective) is synonymous with Lestrade( dumb Scotland yard detective from sherlokian era), though he is not that dumb.

Well this case in terms of quality doesn’t provide anything spectacularly new but then it’s ok for anyone who has the penchant for detective novels.
